awesome little camera

This review is from: GoPro Motorsports HERO 3 Quick Release 3MP Camcorder (Electronics)
I've had this camera for a few months now and have began to love it. I'll start with this. The video and picture quality isn't the greatest. Some newer cell phones will rival this in quality. However for the price of this camera I'm not overly worried about damaging the camera. I use both the suction cup mount and a helmet mount and have had no problems being exposed to 150+ mph at the race track. The cam lets you capture moments where you never thought possible. I've also found it to be a useful tool to refer back to and see exactly what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. There will be some trial and error when you first get the camera to aim it and figure the controls out, but after a while you will have a better eye at aiming it. Pick up some lithium AAA batteries. Standard AAA last about 15 minutes where as I have over an hour of recording on a set of lithiums so far and haven't had the low battery indicator come on.

Great product. Used for recording drag racing. Easy to use. Picks up driver view, shifts, tach and speedometer on dash to analyze performance. Come with a bunch of mounts for ll locations. Short battery life. Need to buy rechargable batteries (2 triple A's)if you are going to use it a lot.

HD Hero is a WIN!

I got the HD Hero Camera afew weeks back, I love the Side mount for the car worked great at hi speeds & on harable roads, we will be installing it in the Baja Race truck next, the sports car is great, my only problem is setting it up.. some times if you hit the button wrong when your driving you and it ends up with 2hrs of photo's
kinda pissed me off it was a hell of a run i did too!!
but now I have it set by my drivers door & i can turn it on & off much better..
Buy it !!

Camera may be good, but the case and mount fail
Probably a good camera, but the case breaks at the mount. And i am sure that it happened to more than mine, as i found a few at the race track with the same flaw.

Camera for Motorcycling?
This review is from: GoPro HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
I have used this now a few times and experienced some kinks. One is the necessity to use Lithium batteries (expensive) otherwise it will not work for more than a few minutes. Two is the vibrating base of a bike, it is returning a decent picture but I guess without stabilizing software it would be hard to eliminate some fuzziness. The lack of a info light/screen on the back of the camera makes it a little hard to know when it is on and when not. I accidentally went into single frame / picture mode and lost a lot of good video opportunities not knowing it was not filming.
Overall it is a good value for the money and I am happy I got it.

Met My Expectations

This review is from: GoPro HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
Picture quality is good. Use is not intuitive. Instructions are lacking in clarity and organzation. I discovered I can power it off its proprietary USB mini cable and a car lighter adapter purchased from another vendor online. The drawback is it must be removed it from protective clear box or else drill a hole in box. The USB cable is bundled with the RCA cables. A ferrite bead filter is molded in which dissallows seporation. Can not set time or date. GoPro promised firmware update for 4GB memory capability and has not delivered to date - April 09. Automatic memory overwrite feature would be a big plus. I saw it avertised for significantly less one week after I purchased it. Not thrilled, but not dissappointed either.

Good pics, BAD Battery drain

This review is from: GoPro HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
Good quality, love the wide angle.
Biggest hassles are: 1) Battery drain. Even with brand new lithiums, only good for a couple of hrs of use at most. Less if you leave the battery in the camera (not sure why, but camera continues to drain battery even if off). My commute is 45 minutes, I have to recharge batteries after every use. Ridiculous.
2) Limited to 2gb SD. This is silly, as the camera is a memory hog.

Note to Manufacturers out there: If I could find another wide angle camera that doesn't have these two limits, I'd throw this one in the trash and buy it.

Rugged and great little wide angle video camera

This review is from: GoPro Helmet HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
I was looking for a small, wide-angle video camera to take some footage of a new "ropes-type" adventure course in the Oak Trees high above the Central Florida Zoo. I wanted to create a video of the course so that whoever watched it would FEEL like they were doing the course themselves.

I looked around and it came down to two cameras, the GoPro or the Vholdr Contour. I chose the GoPro because of its: price, 170 degree lens, top mounted on helmet, and it's really waterproof. However, now that the ContourHD is out, I'd seriously consider getting it instead because of it's outstanding feature set.

Here are some pros and cons I have from using the GoPro 5MP.

Pros: Simple, rugged, aim through viewfinder, 170 degree lens (easy to aim!), several mounts included, mounts on top of helmet...not on side, takes AAA batteries (find them anywhere...and rechargeable NIMH's work great). With it's "take a picture every 2s" mode, it can serve as a cheap and portable security camera too.

Cons: No view screen to see replays (but competition doesn't either), only takes 2GB memory cards (1 hour video), Mode icons are too small, no display of elapsed/remaining time, only "medium" video quality.

The end result is the GoPro worked great as an entry level priced helmet camera...it did exactly what I expected and I wouldn't cry if I broke it during an "adventure".

Great footage, when it actually works

This review is from: GoPro Helmet HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
I was so excited to get this and had high expectations. Problem was that this camera worked about 20% of the time. I thought it was the batteries and tried 4 different sets of Lithium and NiMH, but no luck. I thought maybe it was the cold weather on my ski trip, but I had the same problems when biking in 60 degree weather. I was let down. This may be a defective item, but it let me down nonetheless. Relaibility is important to me and this camera isn't reliable. I returned it.

If you are an active outdoor type, you must have this camera
This review is from: GoPro Helmet HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
Never before have I been able to bring home the activities that me and my friends get into in such a fun and engaging way. Kayaking, mountain biking, dirt bikes, and skeet and trap shooting are some of the activities that I've already taken this camera along on. You'll want to take the battery advice from the manufacturer, but the camera performs tremendously well.

If I had one wish, it would be that there is some way to get more sound through the polycarbonate case that protects the camera.

Great idea, average delivery

This review is from: GoPro Motorsports HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)

I was excited to see the video clips on the Gopro site. My use is on a Motorcycle. When I go the product, I found the display a bit disappointing. It is very small and you read it upside down as you might look at the camera with the 'Hero' logo in the lower right corner. The unit itself is somewhat simple in design and doesn't give you the feeling of the quality in even the most common digital camera's you would buy today. Two double AAA batteries go in the back with a cover that you slide off. This cover has a tendancy to slide off while general handling of the camera and is annoying. Do not, let me repeat, Do not use alkaline batteries in the camera-- they don't function properly. With fresh batteries my unit will only run for a short while and then shut off. It also has very erratic operation. Changing to the recommended Eveready NI-MH batteries solved the problem and although not cheap with the charger and all, they are necessary.

The quality of video is ok, but does not work well in low light. This camera does not adjust well to varying light conditions and should generally be used in brighter conditions or full sun. The camera has no anti-shake capabilities so on a motorcycle things are jerky. Make sure you want the 170 deg wide angle as everything is noticably bent with the wide angle even in the focal portion of the picture. And, don't expect clear audio--you won't get it here. The audio quality is terrible. Even with the camera out of the protective waterproof case, there is a constant buzzing noise and the volume is faint even if you talk right in the microphone. In the case on a motorcycle, the sound is unuseable and unrealistic.

For digital cameras these days, being limited to a 2gb card doesn't make sense. The entry level cameras will take 8gb at this point. In talking with GoPro tech support, they are working on a patch to allow 4gb cards, but it seems like a major task for them. All in all, I am disappointed in the quality and performance of their newest product.

Motocross application
This review is from: GoPro Motorsports HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
This thing is the bomb. Using the tall mount on top of my helmet, you can just see my hands on the handlebars. It's as close to being there as it gets, the wide angle view looks goofy in a still, but is just how you see it when you are in motion. My wife (non-rider) saw the video the first time and was all excited. She's seen helmetcam video for a year from my Oregon Scientific helmetcam, but it's a 52 Field of view, compared to the 170 field of view from the GoPro. She says this one is amazing, and that she didn't 'get' what was exciting about riding MX from the other cam.
It's a quality unit, light enough you don't know it's there. New cases are about $40, so if you biff and shred it, easy fix. You will have to get 1000ma NiMh batteries, battery life is crap with regular duracells. I got by with a new set of batteries each day, but the NiMh give adequate life. The mount isn't direction sensitive, so you can stick the camera in backwards without any modifications if you like. Get the Motorsports version, it's got your helmet covered and has all kinds of cool other mounting options in the box. 8^)
To see what the vid looks like, go to the GoPro site and check out the example video from Loretta Lynn's Am. Nats. Excellent!

Top 10 must have's!

This review is from: GoPro Motorsports HERO Wide Camera (Electronics)
A friend of mine had a GoPro Hero and I really liked the quality of the images produced from the tiny thing. So I ended up craving for one. I noticed GoPro released the Hero Wide version and after being amazed at the video quality from their testing along with user uploads, the choice was easy. The ease of use, picture quality, and built-in features was more than I expected. 5mp pictures and TV quality video is all I was really after, but also being able to mount this shock/water proof camera in various places was the icing on the cake. I love it, go buy one or five!

The only bad thing I noticed was that some of the plastic mounts it came with were a bit cheap and broke easily. But I still give it 5 outta 5

Best action camera for the money

This review is from: Drift X170 Action Camera (Electronics)
Length:: 3:41 Mins

This is a quick overview of the Drift x170 (shot with a cell phone camera) and some sample videos taken with the X170 in the first couple of weeks I owned it.

As I point out in the video, the build quality of this camera is great: the battery & media door clips shut solidly, and the rotating lens feels very firm, and doesn't budge after you set it where you want it. Also the clip that holds the camera into the various mounts works well, and is easy to remove when needed.
The battery life is great as well, with two AA's lasting through several hours of video. With a 16 Gb card and just two AA's you can shoot nonstop for around 3.5 hours.
The best point for me to make about this camera is the price. Any other wearable, mountable action camera would cost $300+ but for under $200 you can shoot some really fun videos, with almost no learning curve.

If I had to be critical, I would point out that it doesn't shoot 720p. It does 480p (30fps) and with such a wide angle lens (170 degrees, of course) you aren't really filming the details of a scene anyway.

Ultimately, it's a great value, requires almost no accessories, and is tons of fun.

Excellent Camera and Features but with Limitations of Low Resolution

This review is from: Drift X170 Action Camera (Electronics)
Pros:
1. The camera is so light it almost feels like a piece of styrofoam.
2. The built-in LCD display allows playback anytime without a computer and helps line up shots properly.
3. Loads of mounting options let you securely attach the camera to a helmet, seat post, handlebars, or almost anywhere else.
4. Runs on inexpensive AA batteries rather than special battery packs that are expensive to replace. I get 4 hours of continuous recording from two AA Energizer Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries in warm weather.
5. Wireless remote control lets you start and stop shooting without fumbling for buttons when the camera is on top of your helmet.
6. I pedaled a bicycle for miles through a rainstorm with this camera on top of my helmet and it kept right on working.
7. The camera has a huge field of view (170 degrees wide) so it captures peripheral vision too.

Cons:
1. The picture quality is good for action but not detail. I shot a video in AVI format on a sunny day less than 10 feet away from the back bumper of a stopped car. The resolution is too low to discern the license plate number, even after using the sharpening filter in GIMP on a still frame from the video.
2. I use the camera ten times per week to record a bicycle commute of 20-40 minutes. I find 1 or 2 times in every 20 shoots the camera randomly stops and restarts itself at least once during an attempted continuous shoot. Thus a 20-minute video shoot might actually come out as two files with 10 minutes of video in each, minus several seconds of time in between. I have yet to miss out on anything important but the problem reduces my confidence in the camera getting every shot.
3. The sound input has limitations when the camera is moving. It picks up a continuous 'buffeting wind' sound at 15 miles per hour and a 'whistling wind' effect chimes in at 25 miles per hour. This plays back as loud background noise that obscures softer sounds but allows medium-loud sounds like engines and voices to be heard. The camera has sound input settings of low, medium, and high that have little effect on this problem, other than for the lower settings to make voices and engines impossible to hear over the background noise. Drift would do well to add a 'No Sound' option which at high speeds would be the best choice.
4. The camera has no night vision capability so it's for daylight shooting only unless you have a good secondary light source.

Bottom Line:
This is a very good but not excellent technical product with an acceptable compromise on image quality and price.

Note:
Drift released a new high-definition X170 action camera in July 2010 that addresses the low resolution problem of the X170 and adds new features like night vision. It costs quite a bit more but it's worth checking out if you want fewer compromises.

Fabulous Camera Super for So Many Uses

This review is from: Drift X170 Action Camera (Electronics)
My husband and I bought this camera after using one while cat-skiing in British Columbia. I love the fact that it's compact and low-profile, so it doesn't get snagged in the trees. Most of the other cameras we looked at didn't have an LCD screen or remote control. The screen is really important because I wanted to make sure we're getting the shot we want rather than getting home to find out we were shooting snow or sky all day. For cold weather, AA lithium batteries last longest. I really like the fact that the Drift takes AA batteries, because we didn't need to worry about finding a custom battery in the backwoods of Canada! This camera is simple to operate and phenomenally priced. I'm getting one for my husband for Father's Day so we can both shoot video at the same time. I highly recommend this camera!

Strong Mounts
This review is from: GoPro Grab Bag of Mounts for HERO Cameras (Electronics)
I have these sticky mounts placed in various places on my motorcycle (e.g. front fender) and they hold the camera in place with absolutely no movement. Also the clip that holds the camera onto the mount works surprisingly well. Despite bumps in the road and high speeds the camera doesn't tilt forward or backward from its original position (and that is only finger-tightening the screw - optionally it is possible to tighten even more with screwdriver but I don't recommend since it is only plastic. Save the screwdriver for loosening when you are ready to remove the camera).

Overall well worth the price. You won't find these mounts for sale cheaper than on Amazon. Note: If your local Costco has the Hero camera, it comes with a set of these mounts with the camera. This was my second set of mounts for additional locations (once they are stuck on, they aren't coming off easily).

A rugged and versatile POV cam - that's not just for extreme sports

This review is from: Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth Action Camera with HD Recording, 4x Digital Zoom and 1.5-Inch LCD Screen (Black) (Electronics)

What's struck me is that the real value of this camcorder is its combination of a rugged and durable design with its versatility. It's emphasized for use with extreme sports - but it's useful pretty much anywhere you wouldn't risk another more fragile camera. It's water and weather resistant - not water proof - so you could use it in light rain, maybe even during a hurricane if it was securely mounted, but certainly in extreme conditions where you'd be worried about a standard camcorder. (I've heard that Drift Innovation - the company that makes these - will be coming out with a fully waterproof case for the Stealth some time soon - so that you can add cliff diving and snorkeling to the list of extreme sports you can capture subjectively with the Stealth) The camera comes with three different mounts - one that you can secure to any kind of narrow belt (and it comes with an elastic belt), one that you can put on a handlebar, and one that you can secure to a helmet with the included velcro adhesives. It's easy to orient the camera, even if you've got it mounted in an odd spot - the shooting orientation can be changed simply by rotating the lens manually, and the quick release mount can also be rotated so that the unit can be oriented however you like with respect to the mount.

You can shoot decent photos (5 megapixels - and they look fine, but as you'd expect on a device that's tailored for video capture they don't really compare to the images you'd capture on a compact camera in this price range - expect a few notches up from the quality you'd capture on a phone and you won't be disappointed), and very cool time lapse sequences (with shooting intervals from 3 to 30 seconds apart), plus it takes surprisingly good HD video for such a small camera. It's not as nice or as versatile as my Canon, but the video is at least as good or better than what I can capture on my Flip Mino HD - plus it's got a much wider lens, which is ideal for "point of view" shooting. At 720p it captures a 170 degree view, and it's got a bit of a fisheye effect - which is kind of nice, it looks very cool with POV sports footage but could be effective in other applications as well. At 1080p it captures a slightly narrower range of 120 degrees, and there's less distortion, but not as many options for frame rates. At 720p you can shoot at frame rates from 25fps to 60, and shooting at 60fps allows you to slow the footage down in an editing program without things looking jerky as they would if you'd shot at a standard 30fps and then played back at an effective 15 frames per second. At 1080p you can shoot either 25 or 30fps. (You can also shoot standard definition video if you like). The video is encoded with H.264 in a Quicktime (.mov) wrapper - so it's easy to import and play or edit in a variety of applications.

One other nice feature is that the set comes with a remote control "watch" - you can wear it on your wrist (it's got a velcro band) and it has two buttons: for record and stop. There's a bit of a time lag on the stop function - it takes a couple seconds and sometimes I've found I've had to press the button twice to get it to respond, but otherwise it works quite well. The weak element on the camera is the onboard mike - it doesn't capture clear sound at all. It's noisy and would really only work as reference and not playback. In other words if you spoke into the mike or near the mike you would be able to hear what you'd said - assuming you weren't on a motorcycle, or free falling from high altitudes - and it might help you to remember something - but you wouldn't want to even consider including the audio in a completed video. The main reason for the weakness of the mike seems to be that its input is protected by a rubber seal - in order to ensure the water resistance of the unit. The real value of this camera is in capturing video you wouldn't be able (or willing) to capture in other ways. There is another option with this camera that not all cameras of this type allow, which is to plug in an external microphone - but I'm pretty sure the input is proprietary, which means you either have to buy the mike from Drift or you have to buy one of the input cables for your mike from them. When you do use an external mike you have to keep the rear hatch of the camera open - and Drift sells a kind of silicon boot to help keep things sealed and protected when the mike is connected and the door is open.

The Stealth is not a one-size-fits-all camcorder that will meet every need and wouldn't by any stretch replace a standard camcorder for ordinary shooting, especially given its fixed, extremely wide lens and its substandard onboard mike - but it can capture images you'd never dream of trying to capture with your standard camcorder. If all you want to do is capture extreme sports from the point of view of the athlete, or other extreme images that would put an ordinary camera at risk, this would be a very good option. For someone like me, who only rarely has a need for "extreme sports footage," I know I won't use this all the time, but I'm very happy to have it in my "bag of tricks" because, as I think my little video shows, it's a very versatile camera that can capture some very cool and fairly good quality images and video that could fit nicely into a wide range of different kinds of video projects.

I've owned them all and this is the BEST by far!!
This review is from: Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth Action Camera with HD Recording, 4x Digital Zoom and 1.5-Inch LCD Screen (Black) (Electronics)
I've owned just about every helmet cam on the market and I even sell the GoPro HD Hero on my site and this is by far the best camera I've owned to date.

The thing I like about it most is the ease of use. The menu is like any other PAS camera instead of hieroglyphics like the GoPro and yes I have the LCD on my GoPro and it's still a pain to use. It does take great video but no better than the drift.

I love that I can adjust the mic on the drift and pretty much turn it off if I want to and I can add a remote mic. I have one but have yet to use it. No more clanking from the mount like the GoPro either.

The battery outlast the GoPro and it seems to have great video compression. Long videos have pretty small file size. I took a 48:00 video and it was just under 3 gig.

About the only thing I don't care for is the helmet mount. I haven't used it yet but it's not that clean of a mount, I do like the GoPro better for that. I wound up putting a RAM ball on mine and that's pretty much all I use. All and all I love this thing.

Good Concept - Poor Quality Control

This review is from: Drift Innovation HD170 Stealth Action Camera with HD Recording, 4x Digital Zoom and 1.5-Inch LCD Screen (Black) (Electronics)
Camera arrived and straight out of the box had a faulty microphone. Had a play with it for a few days waiting to hear back from Drift Support and found the picture quality to be excellent. Really liked the good clear images and colour was spot on. Although, I soon found that a fully charged battery would drain overnight if left in the camera (even though the camera was switched off).

Thinking I just had a dud unit, and given the quality of picture, I decided to go through the Amazon returns process and had a replacement shipped out.

Amazon were excellent in how they dealt with the return and replacement. No complaints on that front (Drift on the other hand, took more than a week for their Support people to reply to my emails to tell me that it was faulty and then they passed the buck back to Amazon).

Replacement unit arrived today and upon switching it on I notice the picture is absolutely stuffed, making everything look like a psychedelic music video from the 70's. Back to emailing Drift Support. This time I won't wait for a week for their response. If I haven't heard back by tomorrow it's on it's way back for a refund this time.

You really have to ask yourself where is the quality control? Does Drift not test each unit before it's packaged?

Two cameras and two different problems straight out of the box.

It's disappointing because the Drift is the only one of the top 3 (GoPro/Contour/Drift) that offers external mic and reviewing screen facility.

I won't risk another replacement.

Looks like I'll be switching my allegiance to one of the other two brands.

UPDATE: Received a GoPro HD this week and most impressed with the quality of build and the video taken to date. The mounting system is a little fiddly but not entirely unusable. Changing camera settings was awkward at first but after clipping on the LCD BacPac it was much more simple.

I've just bought a Contour HD as well ($138) and will test that out when it arrives.

Outstanding little camera
I purchased the camera for shooting video while flying. The image quality is outstanding. It does a remarkable job of absorbing small vibrations from the the aircraft.

Wish I had Done Earlier.
Love this 'head' camera. I bought this cam especially for it's radio controlled freq. and hands free start/stop operation. The battery life isn't as long as I would wish.

Very good for autocrosser
This camera is easy to use, and with the LCD screen you can adjust the angle and position so that you know what you are recording. that's a huge advantage over gopro.

Great image, easy to set up and use.
I had the camera mounted on the motorcycle handlebars in less than a minute, the remote works as advertised. Video was very sharp, regardless of the road quality.
